ALPHA AND BETA INHERITANCE FOR YIEL AND YIELD COMPONENTS FROM A WHEAT DIALLEL CROSS
BARKAT ALI SOOMRO AND ALI SWARWAR ABRO

ALPHA AND BETA INHERITANCE FOR YIEL AND YIELD COMPONENTS FROM A WHEAT DIALLEL CROSS
ABSTRACT:
Associated alpha and beta inheritance was studied for number of spikelets per spike , 1000 kernel weight and yield per plant in a five- parent F2 diallel cross of common wheat , The results indicated that reciprocal differences for number of spikelets per spike due to beta inheritance largely contributed bu Khush-hal in maternal and Inia in paternal directiojn. 1000 kernel weight exhibited associated alpha inheritance only where Khush-hal was responsible for maternal and Marquis for highest paternal direction. The overall trend of alpha inheritance was in maternal direction. In case of yield per plant , alpha inheritance was absent, and therefore the reciprocal differences were ascribed to associated beta inheritance for which Inia and Chinook were the highest

A DIALLEL ANALYSIS OF YIELD ITS COMPONENTS IN GRAIN SORGHUM, SORGHUM VULGARE PERS. I. MANIFESTATIONS OF HYBRID VIGOUR.

A DIALLEL ANALYSIS OF YIELD ITS COMPONENTS IN GRAIN SORGHUM, SORGHUM VULGARE PERS. I. MANIFESTATIONS OF HYBRID VIGOUR.
ABSTRACT:
A complete 6 – 6 diallel cross was studied during 1967 and 1968 to measure heterosis for seven agronomics characters viz. yield number of seats per head , number of heads per plot , plant height, days to 50% bloom and threshing percentage. Heterosis was found to be highly significant for all the seven characters, although the effect for grain yield was highly pronounced. Heterosis was striking in cases of crosses involving distinctly related parents. The increase in grain production due to heterosis came largely from more number of seeds per head, whereas 1000-seed weight and number of heads per plot showed little effect on yield.

VARIATION AMONG FIVE VARIETIES OF CORIANDER , CORIANDRUM SATIVUM L.
ABSTRACT:
Five locallv available varieties of coriander were studied with regard to variation in morphological characters and some traits of economic importance. Conspicuous differences were observed in date of maturity, seed size, yield and lipid content if seeds. There was highly significant positive regression of fruit length on floral diameter. The chromosome number was confirmed to be n=11.

INDUCTION OF USEFUL MUTATIONS IN BASMATI RICE

INDUCTION OF USEFUL MUTATIONS IN BASMATI RICE
ABSTRACT:
Dry cells of rice variety Basmati-370 were exposed to 15, 20, 25 and 30 kR of gamma rays, and 1.0, 1.5 and 2.5 kR of fast neutrons. In M1 generation the pollen and spikelet fertility decreased with corresponding increase in radiation exposure. In M2 the frequency of chlorophyll mutations increased as the radiation dose increased up to 2.0 kR of fast neutrons and 25 kR of gamma rays whereafter

EFFECT OF HYDROSTATIC PRESSURE ON THE CELL WALL OF CALLITHAMNION CORYMBOSUM (SMITH) LYNGB
MUSTAFA SHAMEEL

EFFECT OF HYDROSTATIC PRESSURE ON THE CELL WALL OF CALLITHAMNION CORYMBOSUM (SMITH) LYNGB
ABSTRACT:
Callithamnion corymbosum exposed to 400 atm for 5, 10 and 20 hr caused no visible after effect, while subjection to 500 atm resulted in the swelling of longitudinal and transverse walls. The intensity of swelling increased with the rise of pressure level as well as the duration of its action. The thickening produced after short exposures gradually disappeared , but a

BIOLOGICAL CONTROL OF SCLEROTIUM ORYZAE CATT., THE CAUSE OF STEM TOOR OF RICE IS POPULATION AND VIABILITY OF SCLEROTIA IN SOIL

BIOLOGICAL CONTROL OF SCLEROTIUM ORYZAE CATT., THE CAUSE OF STEM TOOR OF RICE IS POPULATION AND VIABILITY OF SCLEROTIA IN SOIL
ABSTRACT:
A floatation technique was developed for the recovery and enumeration of sclerotia of Sclerothum oryzae from soil. During a study of the population of sclerotia od S. oryzae in soil of rice-wheat-rice or rice-fallow-rice rotations a greater number of sclerotia were observed in soil under wheat as compared to rice or fallow fields . More sclerotia were found on the soil surface with gradual in numbers at 6’’ and 9’’depths. Viability of sclerotia on rice stubbles and in rice fields was much higher than the sclerotia isolated from the soil under wheat crop or fallow field. Decreased viability of sclerotia at greater depths was related to a predominant colonization of sclerotia by bacteria.

COTTON WEEDS AS HOSTS OF MYROTHECIUM RORIDUM TODE EX. FR.

COTTON WEEDS AS HOSTS OF MYROTHECIUM RORIDUM TODE EX. FR.
ABSTRACT:
Myrothecium roridium is a wide spread fungus causing leaf spot disease of cotton in cotton tracts of Punjab (Tanweer and Saleem, 1974) It has been observed on many cotton varieties including the local ones. The disease first appears as small circular, whitish, grey ringed spots with define margins on the leaves. As the spots grow in size, they coalesce large irregular spots . Concentric rings appear under unfavourable conditions of development and on both sides of the leaf black pinhead sized sporodochia of round to irregular shapes are seen.

MYCOFLORA OF POULTRY FEEDS
ARSHAD JAMAL AND ABDUL GHAFFAR

MYCOFLORA OF POULTRY FEEDS
ABSTRACT:
The poultry industry has played a significant role in meeting the demands of meat shortage in the country. There is an average annual consumption of approximately 80,000 bags equivalent to 4,000 metric tons of the poultry feeds sold by atleast 6 manufacturers in Karachi alone. The main constituents of poultry feeds are grains of wheat rice, millet, maize, rye and fish meal. There doesn’t appear to be any quality control on Pakistan in manufacture of poultry feeds nor information is available with regards to its deterioration during storage or transit. Micro-organisms are principally responsible for spoilage of foods and feeds (Gray, 1959). A preliminary experiment was therefore carried out to study the population of mycoflora in poultry feeds.
