EFFECT OF BREEDING SYSTEM ON THE GENOTYPIC STRUCURE IN TRIFOLIUM SPECIES
M. SALEEM AND C. J. GLIDDON

EFFECT OF BREEDING SYSTEM ON THE GENOTYPIC STRUCURE IN TRIFOLIUM SPECIES
ABSTRACT:
The effect of breeding system on the genotypic structure was studied in 3 Trifoilum species with contrasting breeding system. The two out- breeder’s populations were more variable genetically and more heterozygous than inbreeder’s populations. However, the inbreedr’s populations exhibited an excess of heterozygotes compared with panmictic expectations adjusted for the known amount of inbreeding; whereas the out-breeder’s populations were as heterozygous as would be expected. Some of the several forces which might account for the so-called “heterozygosity paradox” are discussed.

ASPECTS OF THE METABOLISM OF ADANSONIA DIGITATA L.
E.O. ETEJERE, O.T. MUSTAPHA AND G.A. AJIBADE

ASPECTS OF THE METABOLISM OF ADANSONIA DIGITATA L.
ABSTRACT:
Seeds of Adansonia digitata contain appreciable quantities of sucrose, starch, proteins and lipidsas reserve food materials . The food reserves in the seeds decreased during the first two weeks of germination due to hydrolysis by enzymes, reflecting the increase in the activities of invertase and lipase enzymes. It is suggested that the initial reaction in the utilisation of sucrose in A. digitata seeds is probably the invertase hydrolysis of this desacchride to glucose and fructose. High lipid content in the seeds is converted in the free fatty acids and glycerol by lipase enzymes which are then fed in to the glyoxylate cycle to release sucrose which is further utilized to generate energy for the growth of embryo.

IHSAN ILAHI AND MUSARRAT JABEEN

EMBRYOGENESIS IN SUSPENSION CULTURES OF PAAPAVER SOMNIFERUM L.
ABSTRACT:
Papaver somniferum L. seedlings produced a light green, soft and friable callus when cultured on 1/2 Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium containing 2, 4-D( 0.5 mg/1) and Kinetin (0.1mg/l) . After 2-3 subcultures, callus pieces transferred to liquid medium and placed on orbital shaker showed active growth and formation of many cell clumps with loosely arranged cells. Structures resembling various stages of embryo development found in suspension cultures when transferred on solid MS medium containing Benzylaminopurine (0.5 mg/l), Adenosine sulphate (25 mg/l) and Gibberellic acid (10 mg/l) gave rise to green globular embryoids.

COMAPARATIVE STUDIES ON DIRECT SEEDING VS TRANSPLANTING TEXCHNIQUES OF PEDDY
ABSTRACT:
A study on different seeding techniques of paddy was carried out in loamy and sandy loam soils during 1982 and 1983. The seeding techniques used were; manual transplanting of paddy seedling, broadcasting of the pre-germinated seeds, and drilling of dry seeds in “watter” conditions. Amongst the common kharif weeds of paddy, Cyperus iria Linn. was in abundance in all the treatments. The grain weight produced by pre-germinated seed was 14 time more than that of the paddy seedlings transplantation, while the un-germinated seeds caused 6% reduction in weight through drilling. The maximum paddy yield (5.1 t/ha) was also associated with puddled broadcasting of pre-germinated seeds registering an increase of 35% over traditional method of paddy transplanting. Yield was highly correlated (r=0.99) with grain weight in a linear fashion.
