SEASONAL EGG LIBERATION AND POTENTIAL OUTPUT OF HORMOSIRA BANKSII
MUBINA BEGUM F.J.TAYLOR

SEASONAL EGG LIBERATION AND POTENTIAL OUTPUT OF HORMOSIRA BANKSII
ABSTRACT:
Seasonal variation and potential output of egg liberation in the fucalean species Hormosira banksii (Turner). Decaisne was investigated. Eggs were produced throughout the year but the reproductive capacity was seasonal. A good liberation of eggs was observed from July-October (winter to early spring) when the mean sea water temperature was 14oC where eggs produced were healthy, morphologically as well as physiologically and fertilization in the laboratory showed a high synchrony. Liberation of eggs was low at high temperature (17.5-22oC)during December to February and most of the eggs were apparently not healthy often disintegrated when released from the conceptacles and viability of the eggs was also low with abnormal growth.

OCCURRENCE OF ALGAE IN INDUSTRIAL WASTE WATER AROUND KARACHI
ABSTRACT:
Waste water samples of Korangi industrial and SITE areas showed the occurrence of 43 algal species belonging to 39 genera and 4 divisions, in which Mycrocystis flos-aquae, Phormidium purpurascens and Chlamydomonas oblonga were dominant. This is the first report of the occurrence of Chryosophyta from Pakistan.

Effect of vegetative incomtibility on double stranded RNA and mycovirus transmission In gaeumannomyces graminis var. tritici
ABSTRACT:
The vegetative incompatibility of gaeumannomyces graminis ( wheat plant pathlogen) was examined by physical interacrion of field isolates on potato dextrose agar. Due to multi-alaelic system 31 isolates of gaeumannomyces graminis var. tritici. Were divided into 18 vegetative incvompatibility (V.C) groups. The genetic mechanism of of somatic incompatibility appears to be heterogenic . fusion incompatibility was rarely found. The dsRNA components from these isolates belonged to different V-C group e.g. 38 (V- Cgroup A) and 43 (V-C group B) are of the same size. Similarly dsRNA components from isolates 87-1 ( V-Cgrouop F) and isolates 83 (V-C group G) have same size range . the close similarity of the dsRNA present in isolates from diferetn V-C group suggests that somatic incompatibility cannot restrict the ransmission of virus or viral genome (dsRNA ).

Detection of the seedborne mycoflora of sunflower
ABSTRACT:
Using blotter , agar plate and deep-freezing methods as recommended by ISTA , the seedborne mycoflora of sunflower was shown to consist of 20 different genera 36 species of fungi . more fungi were isolated by the blotter method followed by agar plate and the deep-freezing method. Variety HO-1 showed highest fungal colonization among the 20 samples testd. The pathogenic species included rhizoctonia solani Kuhn, macrophomina phaseoline (tassi) goid, fusarium moniliforme Sheldon , F. solani(mart). Appel and wollenw,, F/semitectum berk. Effect of microbial antagonisis in the control of root rot of tomato

Effect of microbial antagonisis in the control of root rot of tomato
ABSTRACT:
Seed treatment with microbial antagonisis viz., trichoderma harzianum , gilocladium virens , paecilomyces lilacinus , rhizobium meliloti and Streptomyces sp., completely controlled infection of tomato rots by fusarium oxysporum in 30 and 120 day old plants. Against macrophomina phaeolina the effectiveness of microbial antagonisis declined with time and only gliocladium viruses was able to reduce M. phaseolina infection after 120 days of treatment . higher germinated of seeds, fresh weight , shoot length and plant lengt at all intervals as compared to control was observed in paecilomyces lilacinus and rhizobioum melilotic treatments followed by glicladium virens , trichoderma harziaderma and Streptomyces sp.

Analysis of resistance I sunflower to charcoal rot pathogen macrophomina phaseolina
ABSTRACT:
Four sunflower hybrids viz., NK-212 , Cargill- 204 , SF-100 and hysun-30 were tested for disease resitance against 26 isolates of macrophomina phaseolina collected from sunflower growing areas in Pakistan. Stem inoculations were made using a tooth-pick and spread of charcoal rot was measured from the point of inoculation. Disease reaction was scored on a 0 to 5 scale ; where 0= no rot and 5= plant death. Resistance was characterized using analysis of variance . a highly significant main effect for both varieties and isolates was detected . this indicated a highly significant difference in horizontal resistance between varieties and in aggressivieness between the isolates however, the interaction varieties x isolates was nosignificant , indicating no evidence of vertical resistance.

Error free repair of alkylated DNA in staphylococcus aureus
ABSTRACT:
The adaptive repair activity has been demonstrated in cells of straphylococcus aureus, reactivation of alkylated phage p68 has been shown to be dependent upon the host cell coded adaptive repair enzymes of the adapted S. aureus cells. In vitro biochemical studies have indicated the nitroguanidine (MNNG) adapted synthesis of al;kyltransferase . however, DNA glycosylase activity has been insignificant.

Subsp, obrusfolia (Tackh). Abedin , al-yahya, chaudhary and mossa and datura ferox L. there is an increase of 5 genera with 27 taxa and 6 genera with 22 taxa respectively against previous reports (migahid, 1978; collenatte, 1985). Key to genera, species their descrptions and geographical distribution are given .

Anti-page Mu activity and mutagenicity of extra cellular peptides of candida tropicalis
ABSTRACT:
Genetic activity of peptides isolated rom cell-free culture filterate of dimorphic yeast candida tropicalis (strain CBS94) was investigated in salmonella/ microsome revesion assay . the peptides induced either base-pair substitutions or frame-shift mutagenesis and one of this promoted both kind of mutations. A peptide also inhibited Mu induced lysis of Escherichia coli, indicating that the peptide could interfere with the growth of a bacterial
