The indumentum of the genus dampiera R. Br (goodeniaceae)
ABSTRACT:
Hairs of 66 species of genus dampiera R. Br, from the outside of corolla were examined. Three main types of hairs are recognized in this genus. The hairs shape and their nature can be used as a most important taxonomic tool for the recognition of dampiera species.

Flower induction in nicotiana tabacum CV. Virginica in sterile culture
ABSTRACT:
Flower buds were induced in vitro on whle stem explants of nicotiana tabacum cv. Virginica and also on thin epidermal layers excised from stem segments. The explants supported flower bud induction and growth, the number of induced buds was more on the epidermal explants than on the stem segments. The flower buds thus produced contained viable pollen grains, a greter proportion of which resembled ā€œEā€ grains of the in vitro produced flower buds. All the stages of meiotic and mitotic sequences were recorded.

The influence of nitrate supply on growth and in- vivo nitrate reductase activity of leptochloa fusca seedlings
ABSTRACT:
Leptochloa fusca (L.) kunth, seedlings suppliedwith 0,5,10 and 20 mm of nitrate were grown hydroponically as well as in sand culture . fresh and dry weight of seedlings sampled at 10, 12, 14 and 16 days after plantation were significantly different from the zero nitrogen treatment with maximum increase I seedlings grown in 10mM, NO3 solution. Total-N of plants exhibited similar pattern . nitrate reductase activity was high and comparable activities were obtained in shoots a well as in roots . differences in all parameters were also influenced by the growing cinditions.

Levels of proline , glycinebetaine , potassium and magnesium in the germinating wheat seeds.
ABSTRACT:
Changes in levels of proline, glycinebetaine , potassium and magnesium in different tissues of germinating wheat seeds were studied. The tissues of the qulescent wheat grains contained proline, glycinebetaine and inorganic ions. During germination the proline levels increased many fold. The aleurone tissue and the embryo contained large quantities of glycinebetaine and

Growth of azadirachta indica and melia azedarach at coastal sand using highly saline water for irrigation.
Rafiq ahmad, D. khan and shoaib ismail

Growth of azadirachta indica and melia azedarach at coastal sand using highly saline water for irrigation.
ABSTRACT:
azadirachta indica and melia azedarach were grown at coastal sand using 10-30% dilutions of saline water; (EC1W : 4.5-14.0 dS.m-1). For irrigation . height and diameter of the plants decreased as compared to control plants which were irrigated with non-saline water. Plants irrigated with saline water showed an increase in moisture content and decrease in chlorophyll , sugar and protein content associated with an increase in proline. Under saline water irrigation M. azedarach showed rapid growth than A. indica . these plants could, therefore, be grown for afforestation at sandy deserts using underground saline water for irrigation where normal non-saline water is not available.

Algae in dry soils of N.W.F.P., PAKISTAN
ABSTRACT:
A total of 34 genera and 78 species of algae have been reported from dry lands of Peshawar, kohat, bannu and D.I. khan districts upto a depth of 15 cm. this includes 18 genera and 51 species in cyanophyceae, 13 genera and 24 species in chlorophyceae and 3 genera with 3 species in xanthophyceae. Algal number decreased with increasing depth. Five genera and 14 species were recorded as possible nitrogen-fixers.

Seed-borne fungi of sorghum in Saudi arabia
ABSTRACT:
Using ISTA technique, 16 species of fungi were isolated from three local varieties of sorghum of Saudi Arabia. Higher number of species were isolated by agar plate method than by blotter method. Of the various fungicides , benlate at 0.2% inhibited drechslera sorghicola and D. specifera pathogenic to sorghum . use of surface disinfectant or the fungicides did not inhibit the growth of rhizopus stolonifer .

Intergeneric hybridization to induce alien genetic transfers into triticum aestivum
A. MUJEEB-KAZI AND M. BERNARD

Intergeneric hybridization to induce alien genetic transfers into triticum aestivum
ABSTRACT:
Intergeneric hybridization investigation in cereals , particularly the triticeae, have gained greater research interest since the late 1960ā€™s . embryo recovery has remained alarmingly low, and at times has only been possible after utilizing special pre-and/or post- pollination manipulative procedures in attempts to enhance crossability . this paper describes efforts to improve triticum aestivum L. (2n=6x=42, AABBDD) by utilizing the alien genetic variation of diverse genera for incorporation of disease resistance or tolerance to soil and environmental stresses. Some intergeneric hybrids between agropyron species , Elymus species , haynaldia villosa , hordeum vulgare , secale cereal, T. turgidum , and T. aestivum are described . additionally are described hybrids of potential agricultural gain and those with limitations of practically.

NAAZAR ALI

Genetic variability and correlation studies in brassica juncea
ABSTRACT:
Sixteen strains were selected from a diverse mustard germplasm and the studies were carried out for the estimation of variability , heritability , genetic advance and correlations in 6 quantitative characters . the strains differed significantly for all the characters. High genotype and phenotypic variances were recorded for pods per plant and plant height. Maximum genotypic and phenotypic coefficient of variability was found for 1000 seed weight. The heritability estimates ranged from 0.51 ā€“ 0.95 and was highest in 1000 seed weight. High heritability combined with high genetic advance for 1000 seed weight and pods per plant indicated additive gene effect for these traits which offers scope for their improvement through mass selection. Significantly positive correlations of seed yield with plant height , number of branches per plant and pods per plant , and pods per plant with number of branches per plant have been found.
