Effect of salinity on 14C-labelled microbial biomass and its contributiob to soil organic matter
M.A. MALIK AND F. AZAM

Effect of salinity on 14C-labelled microbial biomass and its contributiob to soil organic matter
ABSTRACT:
Estimation of soil microbial biomass using fumigation technique revealed a decrease in its content with increase in soil salinity and the microbial biomass was found to be directly proportional to the CO2 evolution from soil. Biomass was estimated to be 4-5 % of the residual organic carbon . 14C component derived from labeled plant material ranged from 31-63% of the total biomass; maximum being in normal soil and minimum in saline-sodic soil. The results of organic matter fractionation revealed a higher 14C activity in fulvic and humic acid extracted from fumigated than that extracted from untreated soil. This differences has been taken as an evidence of direct contributiob of microbial biomass to humic compounds.

Studies on the organization of genes comtrolling lysine biosynthesis in neurospors crassa V. genetic fine structure of locus lysine-5
ABSTRACT:
Gentical studies on lys-5 mutants have reveald that they are highly sterile as well as produce mostl y inviable mutant acospore progency when crossed to other strains. In addition to the other known methods , back crossing of lys-5 mutants, markers and double mutants repeatedly to the parental wild type emerson strain has proved to be effective in improving their fertility.

Prevalence of fungi on barley seeds
ABSTRACT:
Ten varieties of baley seeds harvested in 1976 and collected from tandojam and faislabad were studied for the presence of seed-borne mycoflora . using ISTA technique , 19 species of fungi viz, Alternaria tenuis, , aspergillus niger, A-flavus, Aspergillus spp, chaetomium olivaceum, cladosporium cladosporioides, curvularia hinata, C. pallescence , drechslera hawaiiensis , D. halodes , D. papendorfii, D. rostrata, D. tetramera , fusarium moniliforme, F. semitectum, penicillium spp. Rhizopus nigricans , stachybotrysatra and trichothechum roseum were isolated . of these F. semitectum , D. papendorfii, S. atra F. moniliforme , D. rostrata and D. halodes have not so far been recorded on barley seeds from Pakistan. As determined by the blotter and agar plate methods , the average prevalence of fungi in the

Combined effect of organic amendment and soil moisture on the decline in numbers of sclerotia of mavrophomina phaseolina
ABSTRACT:
Combined effect of organic amendment with mustard on wheat and soil moisture of 0.25, 50.75 or 100 moisture holding capacity (MHC) on the viability of sclerotia of macrophomina phaseolina at various periods of incubation was investigated . no significant changes in population of sclerotia was noticed in dry soil. Sclerotial population declined rapidly in high soil moisture regines of 75-100% MHC. Reduction in sclerotial numbers was more pronounced in wet amendment soil than in non amendment soil . in general organic amendment at 3 was more effective in reducing sclerotial numbers by 86-96% and in wheat

Iheritance of loose smut resistance in wheat cultivars K309 and chris
ABSTRACT:
The inheritance of resistance to loose smut was studied under artificial inoculation field conditions in crosses involving two resistant (K309 AND GHRIS ) and two susceptible (kalam and 0271) wheat cultivars . in the F1 progeny of the resistants susceptible crosses , the dominance of resistance to loose smut in both K309 and chris appeared to be dominant. Segregation of the F2 progeny of K309xkalam , kalamxK309 , K309vC271 and C271x K309 into 3 resistant : 1 susceptible plant indicated the monogenic and dominant nature of resistance in K309. Segregation ratio of 15 resistant: 1 susceptible plant in F2 progeny from the crosses involving chris showed that there were two dominant and duplicate genes controlling resistance to loose smut in this cultivar.

Nitrogen in relation to the development of root rot of barley
ABSTRACT:
Seedling mortality of barley caused by helmininosporium stivum was heighest in hoagland’s solution containing 0.25 times nitrogen of the normal solution . seedling mortality gradually decreased as the level of nitrogen progressively increased from 0.25 to 4 times the nitrogen in

Interrelationship between yield and yield components in rice (oryza sativa L.)
ABSTRACT:
Interrelationship between yield and yield components was studied in two rice cultivars , basmati-370 and basmati pak and their true breeding mutant lines viz EF-29-1 , EF 4-23-1, EF-4-73-1 and EF 27-73-1, DM-16-5-2 AND EF-2-11. These varieties /mutant lines were grown at two population densities (22x25 cm and 22x 30 cm). correlation coefficients were worked out between various yield components . panicle length showed a positive and significant correlation with number of grains per panicle

Accumulation of solar energy by sugar beet fields of Peshawar , N.W.F.P. PAKISTAN
ABSTRACT:
An estimate of net primary productivity of sugar beet fields has been made by measuring yields as determined by the harvest method . mortality of shoot tissue had also been taken into account. Paired-plots method was used for determination of dead organic material of shoots. Net primary productivity of various plants-parts was calculated by the products of then calorific values and yield. Addition of these values gave total net primary productivity for the crop. It was found that net primary productivity of sugar beet fields during its growing period (15 october 1978 to may 1979) was 4672.14 Kcals/m2. The relatve efficiency based on total solar radiations was 0.8 percent and absolute efficiency baed on photosynthecally efficient solar radiations was 1.7 percent.
