Effects of gamma irradiation on the amino acid levels in normal and opaque=2 maize (zea maysL.) seedlings

Effects of gamma irradiation on the amino acid levels in normal and opaque=2 maize (zea maysL.) seedlings
ABSTRACT:
Seeds of ahybrid corn wih normal genotype and of opaque=2 were irradiated at 0-200 Gy (10mGy =1 rad) of 60Co gamma irradiation. The free and bound amino acid levels of these two genotypes were compared from shoots of 10 days old seedkings. In control seedlings totals of free and bound amino acid levels were signioficatly higher in opaque-2 genotype im comparison with the normal genotype . following exposure, the free amino acid levels of the normal genotype did not sshow any significant radiation dependent increase or decrease , while in opaque-2 genotype the total levels of free amino acids showed a significant increase at all exposures, in bound amino acids , on the other hand , significant increase in total levels was obsereved in norml genotype at all exposures, while in opaque-2 genotype decreases were observed at all exposures , except for 100 Gy. Basd on these observations opaque-2 genotype appears to be more radiosensitive than the normal maize.

Seed characters as diagnostic in the perennial sections of the genus silene L. (family caryophyllaceae)-
ABSTRACT:
Seed of the perennial silene species belonging to ten sections are studied . superficial structures of the seed especially the ornamentation of the seed coat prived important in classigying the species into 5 seed types. A few species showed infraspecific seed type variation.

Tissue culture of opium poppy hypocotyls

Tissue culture of opium poppy hypocotyls
ABSTRACT:
Hypocots of papavar somniferum exhibited growth only when inoculated on ½ x MS medium . callus induction occurred on the addition of auxin and a kinetin. Best callus resulted at 0.5 mg/L of 2,4-D and 1.0 mg/L of K in presence of coconut milk, early browning and death of tissue was controlled by the addition of sodium diethyl dithiocarbamate at 250 mg/L. however , the addition of this substance necessitated a change in the hormone concentration and an excellent callus resulted at 0.1 mg/L of 2,4-D , kinetin 2.0 , SDD 250 mg/L and CM at 5% (v/v( . the cultures remained alive for a longer duration on this combination and be easily subcultured.

G.R. SOLANGI , S.M. MOGHAL AND S.D. KHANZADA

Identification of some viruses infecting solanaceous hosts in sind.
ABSTRACT:
Virus diseases identified on the basis of symptomatology , host ranfe, serology and transmission were tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) in tomato, tobacco and chillies , X,Y and leaf roll virus (LRV) in potato and leaf curl virus (LCV) in tomato, tobacco and chillies . leaf url virus group transmitted by whitefly was predominantly present in Sind.

Kinetics of auxin transport under salt stress.
S.S.M. NAQVI , R. ANSARI AND M. HANIF

Kinetics of auxin transport under salt stress.
ABSTRACT:
Studies were carried out where the effect of salt stress on maize seedling growth and auxin transport was determined. As the salt stress increased )0.0, 0.4 and 1.0%) the percent germination remained unaffected while the shoot growth of maize seedlings significantly decreased. Studies on 14C-IAA

Effect of humic acid soaking of seeds on seedling growth of wheat (triticum aestivum L.) under different conditions

Effect of humic acid soaking of seeds on seedling growth of wheat (triticum aestivum L.) under different conditions
ABSTRACT:
Soaking of wheat seeds in humic acid solution resulted in an seedling growth . roots were highly developed and extensive development of secondary roots took place. Soaking of seds in humic acid solution enhanced the uptake of water by roots whereas shoot portion gathered more dry weight. Maximum effect was obtained after 8 hours of seed soaking . soaking of seeds also favoured the growth of seedlings in the presence of high concentration of salts in the growth medium.

Determination of gene- chromosome association for mildew resistance to race 2 of avena sativa L.

Determination of gene- chromosome association for mildew resistance to race 2 of avena sativa L.
ABSTRACT:
F2 seedlings of monosomics I-XV of A. sativa cv. Manod x A. sativa cv . mostyn (S. 242) and 41-chromosome I-XV of A. sativa cv. Manod x A.sativa cv. Cc 7718 were investigated for segregation of resistance to race 2 of mildew ( Erysiphe graminis s. sp. Avenae). There was no significant deviation from 3 resistant : 1 susceptible in a number of lines while a few lines showed significant deviation from 3 resistant: 1 susceptible but the deviation was due to higher number of susceptible plants. It seems that the gene controlling resistance to race 2 of mildew is not located atleast on any one of them monosomes so far available.
