Toxic effects of BaCl2 on germination , early seedling growth , soluble proteins and acid phosphatases in zea mays L.
Javed iqbal and naureen rafique

Toxic effects of BaCl2 on germination , early seedling growth , soluble proteins and acid phosphatases in zea mays L.
ABSTRACT:
Maize seeds were grown in 0 to 100 mm of BaCl2. A concentration of 0.1 mm was stimulatory for seed germination , shoot length and shoot-root weights . all other treatments )1-100 mM) were inhibitory for seeding growth, as eduction in % germination , root-shoot length and dry weights were observed . the decreases were proportional with the increasing concentrations of Ba++. The soluble protein content and acid phosphtatses activity was estimated from the shoots of 1,4 and 7 day old seedlings. The protein content of the shoots showed a decline on all days at all Ba++ treatments (except at 0.1 mM, where a significant increase in shoots of 1 day and insignificant in 4 day old seedlings was noted). The acid phosphatases activity increased with increasing BaCl2 treatments in shoots of 1 and 4 day old seedings, while in 7 day old seedlings the activity was inhibited at 20-100 mm. the possible morpho-physiological causes underlying the Ba++ mediated growth retardation are discussed.

Salt tolerance studies in different cultivars of barley (hordeum vulgare L.)
ABSTRACT:
Twelve barely cultivars were tested for their salt tolerance in cemented tanks lined with polyethylene sheet containing gravel saturated with nutrient solution maintained at electrical conductivity (EC) of 3,5,10,15 and 20 mS cm-1. Barely cultivars highly differed in their response to rootzone salinity . salt tolerance limits ( 50% reduction in green matter yield) of these cultivars ranged from 10.0- 18.4 mS cm-1.

Seasonal variation in rhizospheric population of diazotrophs and rot associated nitrogenase activity of some wheat mutants.
Rakhshanda bilal and kauser A. malik

Seasonal variation in rhizospheric population of diazotrophs and rot associated nitrogenase activity of some wheat mutants.
ABSTRACT:
An experiment was conducted to study the positive nitrogenase activity associated with wheat roots . five mutants (M-5, M- 25, M-13 , M-14 , M-46 ) originating from two different wheat varieties viz, indus 66 and C-591, were selected on the basis of better germination percentage when grown in an unfertiized field plot. The roots were excised and subjected to acetylene reduction assays (ARA) to assess the comparative nitrogenase activity of different mutants. Enumeration of N2- fixing microbial population in rhizoplane ( RP) and histoplane (HP) was done at two growth stages i.e. tillereing and maturity

The influence of hydroxyurea treatment on various stages of the life cycle of pteridium aquilinum L.
Khalida khatoon.

The influence of hydroxyurea treatment on various stages of the life cycle of pteridium aquilinum L.
ABSTRACT:
Hydroxyurea supplied to gametophytes of pteridium aquilinum at various stages of development was lethal at 125 ppm . sublethal doses of hydroxyurea retarded growth and development of the sporophyte at 25 and 50 ppm whereas prolonged treatment at 100 ppm induced dormaney in the first root and lesf buds. Normal sequence of organ formation was disturbed when zygotes were exoposed to hydroxyurea immediately after fertilization . maturing egs became non- viable . hydroxyurea at low concentration delayed spore germination whereas at high concentration inhibited establishment of cordate form. The archegonia initiated and developed under the influence of hydroxyurea produced normal sporophytes but were weaker in appearance.

Micropropagation of zingiber officinale L.
IHSAN ILAHI AND MUSSARAT JABEEN

Micropropagation of zingiber officinale L.
ABSTRACT:
Stem cuttings from 3 month old plants, young buds, rhizome cuttings with shoot bud primordial and juvenile shoots were cultured on ½ MS medium supplemented with different combinations of growth hormones . whereas callus could not be induced on the stem explants, callus was induced on the juvenile shoots which on subculturing to medium with varying concentratios of 2,4-D and BAP evelopd bud primordial . these buds on further subculturing grew into small planntlets. Callus induction was also observed on two week old shoot buds which on subculturing turned into green segmented, pouch like structures . buds were induced on the rhizome explants which after isolation were further propagated into plantlets . the plantlets have been induced to root and transferred to field conditions.

Combining ability studies in beared wheat (triticum aestivumL.)
M. ZUBAIR , A.R. CHOWDHRY, I.A. KHAN AND A. BAKSH

Combining ability studies in beared wheat (triticum aestivumL.)
ABSTRACT:
Combining ability analysis was conducted in a diallel cross made among four wheat varieties viz, NA6, sanine , LU16E and HD2009. The general combinng ability variance was highly significant for plant height, tillers per plant , spike length, spikelets per spike, kernels per spke and 1000-kernel weight, and significant for yield per plant. Specific combining ability was highly significant for all the characters studied except for tillers per plant for which it was only significant . better combining parents were NA6 and saninie. Additive gene effects appeared to be more important for plant height , numer of tillers per plant and spikelets per spike, and non additive effects for peduncle length and grain yield per plant . both additive and non additive genetic

Testcross evaluation of soybean lines
ABSTRACT:
A study involving 12 soybean lines (6 adapted and 6 non-adapted) and 4 lines (2 adapted and 2 non-adapted )were used as female and male, respectively. Groups of crosses , adapted x adapted , adapted x non-adapted , and non-adapted x non- adapted were made and planted with two checks . century and pella at three different locations . highest yields were obtained from adapted and adapted crosses but the mean yield of adapted and non-adapted crosses was equal to the mean yield of the checks.

Genetic variability , character correlation and path analysis of yield components in mungbean (vigna radiata (L). wilczek)
ABSTRACT:
Correlation and path analysis were carried out in 40 elite genotypes of vigna radiate (L.) wilczek . highest genotype and phenotypic correlations were observed between days to flowering and flower initiation (0.9976 and 0.8179 ), pod initiation and flower initiation (0.9945 and 0.7241), pod initiation and days to flowering (0.9930 and 0.8096), pods/ plant and primary branches/plant (0.9859 and 0.5257) and pods/plant and chusters/plant (0.9986 and 0.7892). path analysis revealed that pod initiation , plant height and biological yield had highest direct positive effect on grain yield/plant. The direct effects of flower initiation , days to maturity , chusters/plant, pod length and seeds/plant, on grain yield were high

U.S. QURESHI AND M. QAISER

Palynological study of onosma (boraginaceae ) from pakistan
ABSTRACT:
Pollen morphology of 9 species of the genus onosma from Pakistan was studied . the genus is characterized by 3-colporate pollen grains with sub-prolate to sub- oblate shape; ovate , circular and obtate equatorial outlines. The endoapertures in six species are offset from the equator whereas in 3 species endoapertures are at the equator . the tectum is echinate and granculated with perforations (puncta). The taxonomic position of the genus is discussed in the lght of pollen morphology.

The occurrence and distribution of fungi in a waste stabilization pond system
ABSTRACT:
The occurrence , distribution and relative abundance of fungi in a small waste stabilization pond system at the Karachi university , campus, Karachi, Pakistan, was determined using dilution plate technique. Forty-six species of filamentous fungi were isolated from various sampling points located throughout the system. Among isolates , aspergillus flavus and A. niger were the most prominent with isolation frequencies of 80% and 74% respectively . other commonly occurring fungi were A. terreus (42%), cladosporium cladosporioides (41%) , fusarium solani (49%), penicillium lensent (36%) and P. canescens (29%0. These predominant
