RESPONSE OF TRIFOLIUM SUBTERRANEUM TO SODIUM CHLORIDE UNDER DIFFERENT NUTRIENT CONDITIONS
S.Z. HYDER

RESPONSE OF TRIFOLIUM SUBTERRANEUM TO SODIUM CHLORIDE UNDER DIFFERENT NUTRIENT CONDITIONS
ABSTRACT:
Salt tolerance and interaction of NaCl with nutrient ions of the growth medium was studied in Trifolium subterraneum (cv. Wenigup). Growth of this species was reduced at 50 m-equiv/1 NaCl indicating that it is a salt sensitive species. Such growth reduction was due to higher sodium and chloride uptake and lower potassium content of the plant tissues. Adverse effects of NaCl on growth of this species were more pronounced when the plants were grown in low than in high nutrient solution. In studying the interaction of NaCl at four different nutrient concentrations, the results showed an improvement in growth linearly as the strength of nutrient concentration increased. It is concluded that NaCl at low nutrient reduces growth by ion unbalance which is mainly due to low calcium status of the nutrient medium.

MYCORRHIZAL ASSOCIATIONS IN GYMNOSPERMS OF WEST PAKISTAN

MYCORRHIZAL ASSOCIATIONS IN GYMNOSPERMS OF WEST PAKISTAN
ABSTRACT:
Mycorrhizal associations in gymnosperms collected from West Pakistan have been investigated. All the gymnosperms examined are mycorrhizal. fEctotrophic association is found only in the members of the family Pinaceae, whereas rest of the Coniferales, members of orders Ginkgoales, Taxales and Ephedrales, are found to have endotrophic mycorrhizal associations. Endogone spores are present in the rhizospheres of endotrophic mycorrhizae. Detailed investigations regarding the types of spores and their

EFFECT OF GAMMA- IRRADIATION ON THE SEEDS OF CORCHORUS CAPSULARIS L. AND C. OLJTORIUS L.
ABSTRACT:
Dry seeds of the variety D-154 of Corchorus capsularis and C.G. of C. olitorius were treated with different dosages of gamma-rays. Observations on germination, seedling height, survival of plants and pollen sterility of first generation plants indicated that the C. olitorius was more sensitive to gamma- rays than C. capsularis. The frequency of various types of mutations increased with the increase in dosages of radiation in both the species. Around 80 Kr of gamma-rays for C. olitorius and around 90 Kr for C. capsularis were found to be the optimum workable dose for mutation study in them.

PALYNOLOGICAL INVESTIGATIONS OF SOME MEMBERS OF FAMILY LEGUMINOSAE FROM JAMSHORO (SIND), WEST PAKISTAN - I
K.M. KHAN AND H.R.A. MEMON

PALYNOLOGICAL INVESTIGATIONS OF SOME MEMBERS OF FAMILY LEGUMINOSAE FROM JAMSHORO (SIND), WEST PAKISTAN - I
ABSTRACT:
The palynological study of 28 plants belonging to three subfamilies of Leguminosae from Sind University Campus, Jamshoro, West Pakistan was undertaken. Colpate, colp- orate and porate type of pollen grains were found. Colpate and colp-orate type of pollen grains were three aperturate; the colp-orate type being more frequent. Porate type pollen grains were found only in polyads.

ELUCIDATION OF INTERSPECIFIC RELATIONSHIPS THROUGH CHROMATOGRAPHIC STUDIES
ABSTRACT:
Paper and thin layer chromatographic studies of the three species of Corchorus, namely, (a) C. hirtus L. of Argentina, (b) C. olitorius L. var. C.G. and (c) C. trilocularis L. show that (a) and (c) share more common spots than (b) shares with (a) or (c). Although hirtus belongs to a continent different from Pakistani species of olitorius and trilocularis, morphologicall y it is similar to trilocularis. Chromatographic studies lead one to the same conclusion that trilo- cularis is more closely related to hirtus compared to olitorius.

DETERMINATION OF INTERNAL WATER BALANCE IN EUCALYPTUS UNDE R FIELD CONDITIONS
ABSTRACT:
Method for the determination of internal water balance for Eucalyptus under field conditions was standardised. For relative turgidity determination cutting leaf-discs and floating on water in a covered Petri dish for 6 hrs seems to be best for measuring the degree of water balance in Eucalyptus.

NEW REPORT OF PUCCINI A LEVIS ON DIGIT ARIA SANGUINALIS
ABSTRACT:
Some of the leaves of Digitaria sanguinalis (Linn.) Scop, were found suffering from leaf spot disease in the lawns of Ramna, Dacca, East Pakistan in December, 1969. The spots were distinct, black in colour and circular in outline. About 5-7 spots appeared on the dorsal surface of the infected leaves. On the average the spots measured about o. 1 cm in diameter.
